Waccamaw Blvd.

December 16, 2001- Sunday- Day 51
8:10am- We got picked up early this morning and the guy's name was Alton Stone, he gave me his phone number and said to call him if I needed money or if I needed him to come pick me up, WHAT? These people up here must be smoking the Wildwood Flower or something. I'm 50 years old and never heard such shit as this before in my life. So, far I haven't asked for anything from anybody, except that guy in Ga. for dog food. I haven't even hitch-hiked, folks are just stopping on their own. It's about 30 miles to Myrtle Beach from this store ole' Alton dropped me off on.
1:20pm- We caught another ride as soon as I left the store and he brought us to Conway. We are sitting at a dog park and it has miles of trails around a beautiful lake. Its turning out to be a really nice day. There is nothing between us and Myrtle Bch. now so we'll be there tomorrow, early. I found a local paper fromlast month and I see a lot of permits were issued last month. That means construction! That means jobs!. Better get a move on. Have to find a sleeping spot. Not going to try for the beach today.

Trying to find these little towns on Rand-McNally has been a challenge ... but finally hit pay dirt with Conway, SC - 15 miles outside Myrtle Beach.

When I look at maps, I've only ever seen roads, highways, interstates. After reading about this experience, I don't think I will ever read a map the same way again.

I'll be thinking about all the wooded land between one highway and a destination ... and who or what might in those woods, where they might be sleeping, wondering if they have enough food to eat or clean water to drink.

Good food for thought, Jimmy. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures.
