March 28, 2002- Thursday- Day 153
1:30pm-Me and Skil's are taking a break on the famous 'Appalachian Trail' I wish that I knew I would end up here, I would have got enough food for the trail down into Georgia. We left walking this morning and hadn't got far before we were picked up. A pick-up pulled over and pointed to the back, where 2 other hikers were planted. They were hiking the trail as far as D.C. and this was their first mail drop ( a mail-drop is where you send food ahead of you, and the P.O. holds it for you) Odd that I am a member of the Appalachian Trail conference and never been on the trail overnight, just odd. This couple had a dog and the little guy had his own back-pack, they made him carry his own food. I didn't say it, byt I was thinking,What a couple of ass-holes. Skil's is my best friend, if I wanted a mule I have a mule.
The sign here says that Murphy is 39 miles, that sounds like 2 days if no rides come along. I still haven't lowered myself to hitch-hike, that little sign in Ga. was as close as I got. The cold weather showed its ugly face again last night, I was hoping that these 50's would hang out for a while. I would like to see it warm up enough to don a pair of shorts, and I could trash some of these jeans. I never noticed how heavy they were until I loaded them on my back for an uphill climb. A lot of hikers heading north. I talked to another hiker doing a through hike, which is Mt. Katadin in Maine. He said there were hundreds on the trail since he started at Springer Mt. Most, he told me were thru-hikers, but he said in his opinion most won't make it. This was his second thru-hike, so I guess he would know. The crowd is what has kept me from doing a thru-hike, I kind enjoy my own company. No one has any information on what lies in front of me towards Murphy. I hope there is some thing out there, I only brought enough food to feed Skil's tonight. A can of food weighs 22oz. and every pound feels like a ton.
